How AR Hijab Try-On Actually Works (And Why It Changes Online Shopping)

If you've ordered a hijab online and it arrived looking nothing like you imagined, that's not a you problem. Product photos show hijabs on models. Models who probably don't share your face shape, skin tone, or the way you carry yourself. You're doing the mental math every time: will this actually work on me? Sometimes it does. Sometimes you're repackaging it for a return two days later.

That's the gap we're trying to close.

What AR try-on is

Augmented reality overlays a digital image onto the real world through your camera, in real time. You've seen it: Snapchat filters, the IKEA app that shows a sofa in your living room, Instagram makeup filters that follow your face as you move.

AR hijab try-on works the same way. Open it on your phone, point the camera at your face, and the hijab appears on your head, moving when you move, in the actual color and drape of the real fabric.

You're not looking at someone else wearing it. You're seeing it on you.

How it actually works

Your camera identifies your face (hairline, edges, ears) and uses those as anchor points. The software then maps a 3D model of the hijab onto your head and keeps it there as you move.

Every hijab in the ESHARP catalog has a 3D model built for it. Not a flat image but a model with shape, volume, and the fabric's actual texture and color. Turn your head, tilt your chin, look to the side and the try-on follows.

The whole thing runs on your device. No photo gets uploaded. No data leaves your phone. The camera feed never goes anywhere.

What it can't do

It can't simulate the weight of fabric on your shoulders. It can't tell you whether a silk hijab feels different from a jersey one. And lighting in your room will affect how colors read on screen.

It's a visualization tool, not a perfect replica. But it's a better basis for a decision than a product photo of someone else, and it means you find out the color is wrong before it ships, not after.

Lighting in your room does affect how colors appear on screen. If you're comparing two similar shades (Dusty Rose versus Sand, for example), try near a window rather than under artificial light for the most accurate read.

Why this hits different for hijab shopping

A hijab frames your face. The drape, the style, the color against your skin: these things matter in a way that a pair of trousers doesn't. Getting it wrong isn't just an inconvenience. It's a whole return process, often across international shipping, for something you're going to wear every day.

Most online hijab stores still only have photos. Static, model-on-a-hanger photos. The hijab-wearing shopper has been working around that for years, ordering multiples, hoping one works, returning the rest.

AR try-on removes the biggest variable: not being able to see yourself in it first.

Your privacy is protected

One concern that comes up often: does the try-on see my face and store it somewhere?

No. AR try-on runs entirely on your device. Your camera feed is processed locally by your phone's browser. The video frames are never sent to our servers, never uploaded to a database, never stored anywhere. The moment you close the try-on, the camera stops and nothing is retained.

This is also why no account or app download is required. We don't need your photo because we never handle it. The entire system is designed so the try-on happens on your device and only your device.

For our community (many of whom care deeply about privacy and appropriate use of their image), this was a deliberate design choice from the start, not an afterthought. You can verify it yourself: open your phone's camera access log after a try-on session and you'll see the camera was used only while the feature was open.

Coming soon to ESHARP.STORE

AR try-on is currently in development and will launch directly on product pages. When it's live, you'll find a "Try it on" button on every product page. No app, no account. It runs in your mobile browser.

Tap it, allow camera access, and you'll see the hijab on your face within seconds. If the color's off, you know before you buy. If it looks right, you add to cart knowing it looks right on you, not on a model with a different face.
